Raw Materials Used:

The two main raw materials of roofing shingles are asphalt and fiberglass. The asphalt is used as a bonding agent to hold the shingles together and provide a waterproofing function, while the fiberglass mat provides strength and durability to the shingles. Let's take a closer look at these two materials.

Asphalt: Asphalt is a sticky, black substance that is created from the refining of crude oil. It is melted down and mixed with various additives to create the ideal consistency for shingle production. This mixture is then used to bond the fiberglass mat to the shingles, providing a waterproof barrier and holding the shingles together. This is the "glue" that holds the shingle together, if you will.

            Fiberglass Mat:

Fiberglass is a strong and durable material that is made from glass fibers(as the name implies). In roofing shingles, the fiberglass mat is used to provide stability and strength to the shingles. It is added to the asphalt mixture and then covered with granules to provide protection from the elements.

           Steps in the Manufacturing Process:

Now that we have a basic understanding of the raw materials used in roofing shingle production, let's take a closer look at the manufacturing process itself. There are five main steps involved in the production of roofing shingles: mixing the asphalt, adding the fiberglass mat, cutting and shaping the shingles, drying and coating the shingles, and packaging and shipping.

Mixing the Asphalt: The first step in the production of roofing shingles is to mix the asphalt. The asphalt is melted down and mixed with various additives to create the ideal consistency for shingle production. This mixture is then used to bond the fiberglass mat to the shingles, providing a waterproof barrier and holding the shingles together.

Adding the Fiberglass Mat: After the asphalt mixture has been created, the next step is to add the fiberglass mat. The fiberglass mat is added to the asphalt mixture and then covered with granules to provide protection from the elements. This step is crucial in ensuring the strength and stability of the shingles.

Cutting and Shaping the Shingles: Once

the fiberglass mat has been added to the asphalt mixture, the next step is to cut and shape the shingles. The mixture is cut into individual shingles and shaped to fit the desired specifications. This is typically done using a specialized cutting machine that is designed for this purpose.

Drying and Coating the Shingles: The next step in the production of roofing shingles is to dry and coat the shingles. The shingles are dried to remove any excess moisture and then coated with a layer of granules for added protection and aesthetic appeal. The granules are typically made from crushed rock and come in a variety of colors and finishes to match the look of the shingles to the surrounding environment.

Packaging and Shipping: The final step in the production of roofing shingles is packaging and shipping. The shingles are packaged in boxes and shipped to roofing suppliers and

The boxes are labeled with important information such as the manufacturer, product name, and color, as well as any relevant certifications or warranties.

has gained popularity in recent years as a durable and long-lasting alternative to traditional asphalt shingles. Not only do metal roofs have a sleek and modern appearance, but they also offer a range of benefits for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency and durability of their roofs. In this blog, we'll delve into the many advantages of metal roofing and how it can help you achieve better search engine optimization (SEO) for your home or business.

One of the most appealing aspects of metal roofing is its longevity. While asphalt shingles may need to be replaced every 15-20 years, a metal roof can last upwards of 50 years or more with proper maintenance. This longer lifespan means that you'll be able to save money on

In addition to their longevity, metal roofs are also highly energy efficient. Metal reflects sunlight and heat, which can help to reduce the amount of heat absorbed by your roof and transferred into your home. This can lead to lower energy bills and a more comfortable living environment.

Metal roofs are also known for their durability and resistance to severe weather conditions. They can withstand high winds, heavy rain, and even hail, making them a great choice for areas prone to storms. Metal roofs are also resistant to rot, mold, and pests, which can be a major concern with other types of roofing materials.

Another advantage of metal roofing is its low maintenance requirements. Unlike asphalt shingles, which may require frequent cleaning and

In terms of aesthetics, metal roofs come in a wide range of colors and styles to suit any home or business. From traditional standing seam roofs to more modern, shingled designs, there's a metal roof option to suit every taste. And because metal roofs are so durable, their color will not fade or peel over time, so you can enjoy the same sleek appearance for years to come.

In conclusion, metal roofing is a durable, energy efficient, and low maintenance option that can provide a range of benefits for homeowners and businesses. By highlighting the benefits of your metal roof and using the keyword "metal roof" throughout your online content,

            2.	Get Different Bids

You should liaise with different contractors and get a bid from each. It is important to see what each contractor will offer you. After reviewing each bid, you’ll notice that the prices differ; however, there is a good reason why the charges differ. For starters, the labor charges will vary from one contractor to the other. Also, if the contractor listed quality materials in the quote, their bid will be higher than the rest; these are the factors you need to consider as you peruse through each bid.

            3.	Is the Contractor Insured and Licensed?

A contractor needs to be insured and licensed. If the contractor isn’t licensed and offers roof replacement services in your area, they’re doing so illegally. When requesting such details, you shouldn’t be afraid since the main focus is on hiring the right professionals for the job.

The contractor should also be bonded. If the contractor is bonded, they’ve taken an extra step to protect the client.

Suppose the contractor has a team of subcontractors. In that case, it is important to ensure each of them has workers’ compensation insurance so that the client won’t be liable for fatalities or injuries on the job. Liability insurance also comes in handy since it holds the contractor liable for any missteps or mishaps made on the job. For instance, if the chimney incurs damage as the contractor handles repairs on the roof, they’ll be liable for the damages.

            4. Ensure There is a Contract

It is important to have an agreement in place. The agreement dictates how the roofing project will be carried out. Such an agreement usually involves how much the roofer will charge for roof replacement, repairs, or maintenance. Also, it can contain additional details such as the duration it’ll take to complete the project and when the client is supposed to pay the entire amount. The main reason a contract comes in handy is because the contractor will adhere to everything in the agreement to ensure they’ll be compensated fully for the services rendered. In short, the agreement is meant to safeguard the interests of the client and contractor.

            5. Ask for References

When you get in touch with a roofing contractor, you need to ask different questions to gauge their attitude and understanding. You need to check their portfolio to learn more about how they handle repairs. Also, you can ask for references comprising of recent clients. The references shouldn’t be made up of relatives or close friends of the contractor.

When you contact the references, you should ask about their overall assessment of the contractor’s services. Also, ask about their workmanship, communication skills, and level of professionalism.

You should proceed with your search if the contractor fails to provide references.

            6. Hire a Contractor that Offers a Warranty

A good contractor is confident in the quality of work. As a result, a professional contractor should offer a

or repairs. If errors occur and the warranty is still active, the contractor will handle the repairs free of charge. First, they will inspect the roof and determine the most suitable course of action depending on the existing errors.

            7. Ask for Referrals

As a homeowner, you’ll need replacement or repair services at some point. So, it is important to ask for referrals from friends or family. If any of your friends have worked with a roofing contractor at some point and they offered quality services, they’ll go ahead and issue a recommendation.

            8. Check Online Ratings

Before hiring a contractor, it is important to check online ratings on platforms such as the BBB (Better Business Bureau), a dedicated agency acting as an ethical marketplace for sellers and buyers. The Better Business Bureau used different rating elements before issuing a final rating grade.

They consider the type of business, transparency level, complaint volume, and business time before issuing a rating. If clients have complaints on the Better Business Bureau platform, they can also check whether they were resolved.

The BBB platform allows you to search for

           roofing contractors

, and you’ll also have a better understanding of the history of their business and how they handle complaints from previous clients. A contractor can handle a complaint poorly, well, or they can even ignore it.

What Should You Expect from a Roofing Contractor

When dealing with a professional roofing contractor, you should expect the following:

•	Detailed Diagnosis

If the contractor is supposed to carry out roof repair, they should conduct an inspection. In such an instance, they should issue a detailed report of what’s wrong while outlining the options for replacement or repair.

•	Quality Customer Service

Carrying our replacement or repairs can be expensive and stressful. As a result, you should hire a reliable contractor who responds promptly to all your concerns.

•	Building Permit

The contractor needs to secure a building permit. They can also liaise with a building inspector to organize an inspection to determine whether the roofing repairs or replacement have been carried out well.

•	Quality Roofing Materials

The quote issued by the contractor needs to contain the materials that will be used to handle the replacement or repairs. You need to take time to ensure all the materials listed in the quote will be used for the repairs or replacement.

Final Thoughts

10 Things To Consider When Choosing Roof Materials

The rooftop of your house is just as important as other areas of your house. It's crucial to keep your home and family safe from the elements and intruders. The roofing material you choose will significantly impact your property's safety.

Some homeowners believe they can decide on roofing material just based on how it looks, but this is not the case. While outside appearance is essential, there are other important considerations.

Here are essential aspects to consider when choosing the best roofing material for your home:

           1.The Slope of the Rooftop

It would help if you considered the roof's slope before making a final decision. Your roof's capacity to shed water will be a deciding factor. Most American homes have high roof pitches, making asphalt shingles the most common roofing material.

You should use material designed to withstand the weight of pooled water if your rooftop has low slopes.

           2.Weight of the Material

Roofing materials vary in their heaviness. Before deciding on a roofing material, you should check that your home's structure can handle the weight. The structural integrity of your home is at stake, making this a crucial consideration.

If the material is heavy, you may need more time or money to complete the project. If you want to replace your current roofing material with something heavier, you may need to have your house's structure reinforced.

           3.The Local Environment

Depending on the severity of the weather where you live, you may require exceptionally sturdy roofing materials that are resistant to high temperatures. There are several types of roofing materials, each of which is best suited to a different climate.

A rooftop with a gentle slope will let water and snow slide off. For instance, if you live in an area with frequent downpours, you'll want to use a material that will hold up to water.

Mold, mildew, moss, and algae can develop on your rooftop and reduce its effectiveness if you live in a humid coastal area. You should pick material that is more resistant.

Roofing can be easily damaged by extreme weather; therefore, selecting materials that can withstand it is crucial. For example, tiles made of terracotta, concrete, or slate are excellent choices for regions with high temperatures.

Building materials like slate, metal, and asphalt shingles are great for retaining heat, which is especially important if you reside in a colder climate. It would help if you talked to a roofer about your alternatives to choose the one that works best for your house.

           4.Color Options

You shouldn't be restricted in your options just because you buy a home. When designing your rooftop, keep in mind your property's practical and aesthetic requirements. The ability to choose the exact shade of your rooftop is essential.

           5.Need for Roof Repair

Consider how much you value your time and energy and how much you are prepared to invest in roof replacement, maintenance, and repair. For example, metal requires far less maintenance, making it a good choice if you are busy.

Investing in a new rooftop is a long-term decision. All materials require maintenance to last but some need more maintenance than others. It would be best if you chose materials that suit you.

           6.Material Longevity

It would be best if you considered the material's longevity. You should know the product's projected lifespan to ensure a flawless installation and maximum longevity for your rooftop.

Find out how every roofing material reacts to elements like wind and water and the environment in your location before making a decision. The material's set of attributes defines its weather resistance.

           7.Energy Efficiency

The level of indoor comfort you experience is directly related to how well your rooftop reflects heat. To find the material that makes the most significant difference in energy efficiency, it's vital to investigate the thermal qualities of all available options.

You can reduce your monthly energy costs if you have the correct roofing materials. Specific building components, such as metal and asphalt shingles, are better at reflecting the sun's heat away than absorbing it.

If you have a cool rooftop, your air conditioner won't have to work hard to maintain a pleasant indoor temperature. Your monthly energy costs may dramatically change if you do this.

           8.Cost Variation

To determine your financial limitations, you must first review your budget. The cost of materials will heavily influence your project's bottom line, and the pricing of roofing materials might vary widely.

It is essential to factor in the cost of labor, the cost of obtaining necessary permits, and the cost of any unforeseen modifications or repairs when estimating the total project cost.

Knowing your budget can help you narrow down the options for roofing materials. Remember that it's not always the case that the most expensive materials are the best.

           9.Home Architectural Style

Roofing materials are not universally suitable for all house designs, and you should consider your home's architectural style while making your final decision. For instance, although tiles are best for homes with ancient designs, asphalt shingles may be used on any rooftop.

When paired with dark rooftops, bright colors like red, green, and yellow provide a striking contrast. If you want a conventional but contrasting style, pair a white house with a black roof, or vice versa.

Brown rooftops, combined with a cream color, look great on homes painted tan, cream, or brown. Make sure the material you pick complements your home's design and your walls' color scheme.

           10.Roofing Application

If your rooftop is going on a brand-new building, an upgrade to an already-existing one, or a replacement for an older one, all these factors will affect the material you choose.

Compared to roofing repairs, installing a new roof gives you greater flexibility regarding material, pitch, and underlying rooftop structure.

Because an extension must perform as intended and blend in with the existing structure, you are restricted in your material choices if you decide to add roofing.

           Bottom Line

Once a homeowner's newly installed roofing system begins giving them trouble, they often appreciate the value of roofing material. If you want a rooftop that lasts, looks good, saves you money on energy bills, and doesn't break the bank, you need to consider the materials you use carefully.

You are likely to make a more educated decision when you are aware of the benefits and drawbacks of various materials and their level of sustainability. What To Look For In A Roof When Buying A Home

Whether it's your first or an update you've been planning for years, buying a home is a major life decision with long-term consequences.

Don't get too caught up with the large, open kitchen or the swimming pool before giving the rooftop your full attention. Even though the rooftop of your new house won't win any beauty contests, it will be the first line of protection between mother nature and your household and all their belongings.

It would help if you always had a professional do a free inspection before you make an offer. When searching for a new house, here are the roofing considerations you should keep in mind.

Determine How Long the Roofing Has Been Around

Before you even consider making an offer on the house, you should get it inspected. Do some snooping around, and don't ask the seller to tell you this. The seller may be inclined to provide the wrong information.

Checking for mold is high on the list of things to do while inspecting. Check for unevenness in the surface and any bumps or curves you see.

While an older rooftop isn't inherently wrong, you should examine it to ensure it is in good condition. Check for missing or damaged shingles and areas where the shingles have worn down. Such irregularities in the surface are usually signs of advanced age.

The expected lifespan is something you should verify with the proprietor. Common roofing materials include composites, metals, tin, rubber, and cedar shingles. Composite shingles are the way to go if you want a rooftop that lasts for decades without any problems.

Composite shingles in the midwest typically last only 10 and 15 years due to the region's frequent storms and strong wind. The roofing condition can be used as bargaining leverage if you know it's nearing the close of its useful life.

           Effective Ventilation

The house you're considering may have brand new roofing, but if it doesn't have proper ventilation, it could cause significant problems.

It's essential to have windows that let in plenty of fresh air and light. These are crucial considerations that should never be overlooked during home buying.

A lack of adequate ventilation can lead to a host of issues. It not only makes things worse and more expensive but also promotes mold growth.

Be on the lookout for any cracks or leaks

The flooring and walls of a home are particularly vulnerable to water damage from leaking rooftops. They can cause a lot of trouble and suffering for the residents. Therefore they need to be of top-notch quality.

Leaking is also bad for the walls and paint and can even ruin your furnishings. Sometimes the leak's origin is not immediately apparent. Once the leak has started, finding the source can be a significant hassle. You will need a

Remember to examine the rooftops for leak areas before you purchase it. Even roofing wrinkles have leaks. You may also need to explore the valleys as well as smoke chimneys. Be mindful to check out each of these areas as well.

           Fungus on Rooftop

Mold is a fungus that appears in numerous hues – dark, green, white, or black. While some molds are visible and aggressive, some may be hidden or can't be identified easily.

Mold can build between walls, underlying rooftops, and floors or in less obvious areas. Mold is prevalent in water-drenched surfaces such as rooftops with drainage and gutter systems.

Molds can pollute the walls as well as the paintwork of the property. The primary reasons for mold development are poor ventilation ducts and water leaks, which develop more if not addressed.

One of the primary causes of a damp rooftop is water ingress. Most people notice mold getting fixed and disregard the source that caused it. Mold eventually returns to the same area if the cause of the leak isn't handled.

Mold on the rooftop is harmful to your property. It doesn't only impair the appearance but also generates terrible odors that might make it tough to live. Also, health issues such as wheezing and skin or eye irritation may arise from mold.

Small holes in rooftops necessitate scrutiny for leaking and mold. A competent

Check out the rooftop drainage system while you are inspecting. An excellent technique to assess the state of a rooftop is to climb up there and look at the drainage system. Professionals should handle that for you. Or, if you insist on attempting it on your own, do so with extreme caution.

The rooftop of your home is a crucial structural component. It protects the ones you love most and helps them feel secure. A new roof is a large investment in your residence and helps keep your family and home safe from the elements and damages. Although each homeowner will have different situations with local weather and workmanship quality, the following list will tell you the average lifespans for six of the most common types of materials in use today.

performs a roof replacement, even the most economical options can last 15 to 20 years or more. Asphalt shingles are a very budget-friendly option, with a cost that starts at around $70 per 100 square feet of roof area.

These shingles cover many of our nation’s homes, usually offer a 20-year warranty, and come in various designs. Some asphalt shingles incorporate fiberglass, which makes them more lightweight and fire-resistant. Asphalt shingles made with organic materials such as cellulose offer more durability due to a heavier asphalt coating.

Asphalt shingles can become damaged in humid areas due to algae or fungus growth, so look for algae-resistant shingles if needed.

           Architectural Shingles – 25 to 30 Years

Architectural shingles are made of the same materials as asphalt shingles. However, these premium-level asphalt shingles are made of two to three layers, which provide a denser, more resilient roof. These shingles cost from $250 to $450 per 100 square feet, but they look much more aesthetically pleasing in addition to their higher durability.

Due to their multiple layers, these shingles can mimic the look of higher-end materials such as wood, tile, or slate. Architectural tiles often come with a 30-year or longer warranty, and you might have seen them adorning historic and vintage homes in Edmond and Oklahoma City.

Wood Shingles – Up to 30 Years

Wood shingles make a great compliment visually for owners of a Tudor or cottage-style home. The natural material fits the theme, and most wood shingles are made of insect-and rot-resistant cedar wood. Cedar shingles usually weather over time into a soft, silver-gray tone that increases its natural esthetic.

Prepare to spend $250 to $600 per 100 square feet, and check first to see if your homeowner’s insurance covers wood shingles or charges a premium to insure your home because of them.

Some wood shingles come with a fire-retardant treatment, and installation costs are usually lower. The caveat is that wood shingles need a yearly checkup for maintenance. Due to the natural material, wood shingles can split, warp, or otherwise disfigure. Replacing these shingles as soon as possible is the best way to prevent leaks, loose shingles, and other damage.

Clay Tiles – 50 Years or More

The climate often dictates a need for specific materials, and clay tiles work well for homes in hot, dry climates. While some of these tiles are clay, many are tinted, molded concrete. This material offers superior insulation from the hot sun and stands up well to years of hot, desert-type weather.

Clay tiles are quite brittle, which necessitates professional installation. The tiles require precise measuring and pattern placement to work as intended and can weigh almost 950 pounds per 100 square feet. A roof replacement going from asphalt to clay tile might require work on the home’s structure to support the additional weight of the clay tiles.
Clay tile manufacturers usually give a warranty on the tiles for 30 years to a lifetime.

Metal Panels – Up to 70 Years

While clay tile is perfect for a desert home, metal paneling works great in snowy climates because it lets the snow slide right off the house. The market offers various prices and quality levels, so expect to pay anywhere from $115 to $900 per 100 square feet, depending on the type of metal, special coatings, and other details.

Metal panels are made of aluminum, steel, or copper and have a lower carbon footprint than asphalt tiles due to the large amounts of petroleum-based products used to make asphalt shingles.

Lower-cost metal material is thinner and less durable so expect a life span of up to 25 years. Thinner metal might become dented in a hailstorm or from falling tree branches. Dents are very difficult to remove, so take this into consideration. Thicker-gauge metal costs more but also carries a warranty that ranges from 20 years to a lifetime.

Slate Tiles – Up to 100 Years

Slate is a naturally occurring stone that cuts easily into uniform tiles for roofing. The stone’s grain has a smooth-textured appearance and holds its beauty and structural integrity for decades of weather.

Slate tile manufacturers often give warranties lasting from 50 years to a lifetime, which helps soothe the wallet after paying from $600 to $1,500 per 100 square feet of material.

If a slate tile breaks, it is very easy to replace, and the slate can withstand just about any weather conditions. In addition to the cost of the tiles, the slate is extremely heavy, and standard house rafters will not support it. A roofer must add additional reinforcements to the home and install the tiles with much precision, so use a knowledgeable,

The number one variable is going to be the cost of the materials. If you're using composition roof shingles it will be cheaper and faster than cedar shake shingles, or metal roofing materials. With composition shingles, it allows the repair to be more isolated since you can just repair small areas at a time without having to repair large chunks of the roof.

However, if you have rotted wood on the soffits or fascia of the house, it could be letting moisture under your roof or behind your brick or siding. These are items that could cause larger issues down the road. They could be far reaching issues that you would want to address immediately.

Most roofers will price jobs based on the measurement of how many "squares" your roof is. A roofing "square" is a 10 x 10 area making up 100 square feet of a roof. This is typically how roofers will determine labor costs as well as how many bundles of material is needed. Obviously, the more square on a house, the more expensive the replacement will be.

What Is The Pitch Of Your Roof

Another major variable when estimating the cost to replace a roof is the pitch of a roof. The pitch is calculated by determining how many inches the roof surface rises across a 12 inch run. For example, if a roof rises 5 inches in a 12 inch run, the roof has a 5/12 pitch. Most roofs will have a pitch between 3/12 and 8/12. Any pitch larger then that will likely have an added cost for labor because of how steep the roof is. The higher the pitch, the more difficult and dangerous the roofing job can be, so roofers will charge a premium for the replacement.

Just like any feature of your home, the roof has cheaper material available as well as expensive aesthetically pleasing materials. You could replace your roof with "3-tab" composition shingles or a higher end architecture shingle, or all the way up to cedar shakes, slate, clay, or metal materials. I would recommend consulting with your

If your roof have isolated shingle damage, it might be best and easiest to simply replace the individual damaged shingles. This can be caused by heavy wind pulling up one or two singles, or a tree rubbing on a small area of your roof causing the shingle's surface to wear down and lose its water proofing integrity. If the damage is wide spread you might need to replace it, but if it's only a couple shingle you might be able to get away with a small

Small leaks can be cause by a number of things. Sometimes there's a nail head that's exposed and allows water to seep in, or maybe a wind damaged shingle allows water to get under it. In any case, if you notice water stains in any place on your ceiling or walls, you need to call a roofer immediately. Your roofer can investigate and identify the cause of the leak and make the necessary repairs. Most times, this can be solved by replaced a few shingles or sealing over some old flashing or nail heads.

The flashing is one of the least understood pieces of the roof. Flashing is a soft metal that wraps around openings in your roof. You will find flashing around chimneys, vents, windows, dormers, or any other opening in your roof. The flashing is designed to divert the water around the opening. If a piece of flashing is installed incorrectly or the sealant is wearing away it can begin to allow water to seep in. Failed flashing is one of the most common causes of roof leaks. Sometimes you must replace the flashing to fix the issue and sometime all you need to do is re-seal the existing flashing. Contact a

Most people think gutters are a luxury and don't realize they serve a functional purpose. Your gutter system is designed to catch all the water that is shed from your roof surface and divert it away from your house's foundation. However, sometimes gutters and fill up with leaves or debris and that causes the gutters to hold water instead of divert it. Sometimes your gutter system can be damages by trees or ladders that are touching it as well. In any case, if the gutter system is not properly diverting water, it could allow the water to flow up under the roof shingles or along the roofing soffits or fascia. All of these can cause larger issues down the road if not repaired immediately.

           Inadequate Ventilation

Ventilation is another function of the roof that most people don't ever think about, but could cause big problems if it's not installed correctly. Your attic can get very hot in the summers and that heat can literally cook your roof. All shingle have a certain temperature rating, and if the shingles raise about that temperature then the shingles can be damaged by the heat. They can crack & blister which could create openings for water to seep in. Making sure you have adequate ventilation can extend the life of your roof significantly.

in the rain, wait til it dries to fix it. It's too dangerous to work on a wet and slippery roof. Fix the roof a day after the storm hits for the best results.

Never work on your roof by yourself. You should always have someone else present, even if it is solely for the purpose of having someone that can call emergency services if you fall. Falling from the roof can be a disaster, but not having someone to help you is even worse.

When choosing shingles, it is important you properly assess how long you would like your roof to last. For example, if you need a new roof but don't plan on living there for over ten more years, you could save money by using shingles that aren't meant for time periods longer than this. Remember, however, this has the possibility of lowering the value of your house upon the sale.

If you're attempting to handle roof repairs on your own, proceed with caution. A roof is a dangerous place to be, and you want to be properly equipped for it. Wear shoes with rubber soles, and use a well braced ladder that has rubber safety feet. Again, we recommend consulting a professional. Your roof isn't worth risking your life over.

Professional contractors usually offer full warranties on new roofs or roof replacements, but they may not on repairs. Always get a copy of your warranty when the work is done.

This can save you both time and money. If the damage is more extensive, the only option might be a full roof replacement.

There are a number of things to know about roofing, and a number of things you have to decide. It is easy to become overwhelmed with all the information. Having great advice readily available is crucial. The following article has some great tips with regards to roofing.

Your roof needs to be inspected by you on a yearly basis at the least. Your roof is most likely to incur damage during winter and spring. For this reason, carefully monitor your roof during these months.

Don't set step on your roof without properly securing your footing. This is important because it is very easy to become unbalanced and fall.

Mow the lawn prior to the removal of your old roof. Having cut grass will help both you and the roofing contractor find any nails that have fallen on the ground. Your roofer may use a metal detector to locate lost nails, and this job will also go faster if your grass is freshly trimmed.

, it's time to turn them down and ask them to leave. These unscrupulous roofers will stop at nothing to get you to sign a contract with them, and you always end up on the losing end, so stop them in their tracks.

Never go up on your roof without professional training. If you're having major issues, get a professional out there asap. You want to avoid walking up there and causing a cave in.

is an absolute must-have. If the roofer you use causes damage and they are uninsured, you are responsible for the bill. Do not just ask if a prospective roofer has insurance, ask them to provide you with the documentation that their insurance is current and comprehensive as well.

If you want a "greener" roofing option, you may want to consider installing a living roof. A living roof provides you with space to plant. It can only work in some places and some situations, though.

Just like any major system of your home, we recommend regular inspection. We recommend inspecting your roof at least once per year, or after any major storm. Staying up to date with regular roof inspections can allow you to catch small problems and take care of them before they become large problems. Often times, you can make

There are a few things to consider when review or inspection your roof:

           Age of Roof Surface:

First, the overall age of the roof is a major consideration. Like any material on your home, your roof have a lifespan. If the roof is relatively new, it might make more sense to make repairs, rather than a total replacement. However, if the roof is older and closer to the end of its expected lifespan, it might not be worth making repairs and it might just be better to replace it.

           Scope of Damage:

Second, what is the scope of the damage. If the damage is isolated to one single location, or even one single slope of the roof, it might be worth making the simple roof repair. However, if the damage is spread over the entire roof surface, it might require a replacement. When it comes to wind and hail damage, roofers and insurance adjusters use a rule of thumb to determine if the damage is wide spread enough to replacement. The standard rule of thumb is approximately 10 damaged shingles within a 10ft x 10ft section on the roof. They also look for damage in multiple slopes of the roof, not just 1 single slope. Contact us for a quick consultation and we can let you know what we think might need to be repaired and what might need to be replaced.

           Extent of Damage:

Roofs are made to withstand heavy damage from wind and hail and sometimes the damage can be minor. If the damage is minor enough, even if it's wide spread, sometimes a replacement is not necessary. minor damage can be touched up, or just monitored. The opposite can also be true. There might be very isolated damage, but if it is severe enough, it might need total replacement. Examples of this might be if the decking under the shingles is damaged, or hail hits that pierce the shingles entirely, etc. If you've got a damaged roof and you're not sure what to do, contact us today and we can let you know if it needs a roof repair or if it needs a total roof replacement.

            Lastly, it's important to

understand the role that insurance plays

in the 'replacement vs repair' discussion. At the end of the day it's the insurance company that determines what needs to be done. The insurance company insured your home and everything in it. All the building materials, the personal property, the people, etc. For that reason, the insurance company puts a lot of emphasis on the roof, since it is the thing that most protects everything else form the elements. That is why insurance companies are overly cautious when it comes to repairing and replacing roofs. Even though a roof is only a few years old, sometimes insurance companies will recommend a replacement even if a damage is isolation. And other times, insurance companies will see large scale damage, but they still only recommend repairs. It's difficult to predict and that's why it's important to work with a

No one ever expects to have a roofing repaired or replaced, but if you live in your home long enough, you'll eventually need it. And when it happens, it's important to know who to call. A

is key in these situations - someone who will be there promptly and who knows what they're doing. Unfortunately, not all roofers are created equal, so it's important to do your research before hiring one. Luckily, there are plenty of resources out there to help you make the right decision. So if you're ever in need of a roofer, don't hesitate to reach out for help. You'll be glad you did.

There's a lot to think about when you're hiring a roofer contractor to work on your home. You want to find someone who is reliable, has a good reputation, and is reasonably priced. But how do you know if a contractor is the right fit for your project? Here are some tips to help you pick the best contractor for the job.

           Years of Experience

           - Picking the right roof repair contractor can be tricky. The first thing I would look for is experience. It's not unprofessional to ask your roof contractor how long they've been repairing roofs and replacing roofs. How many years have they been doing it? How many roofs have they done? etc.

           Multiple Bids

            - I know time is never on your side when you're needing a roof repaired or replaced, but be sure not to go too fast and just pick the first roof contractor you meet. Sometimes, as consumers, we value convenience over quality. When it comes to fixing your roof, you don't want to make this mistake. Take the time to get multiple bids and get a feel for the roofing contractor and the scope of work each is recommending.

            - The roofing industry is notorious for 'fly-by-night' companies popping up one day and being out of business the next. There is a very low barrier to entry in the roofing industry and thus it allows a lot of rift raft in. Make sure your roofer is properly licensed and insured. No one ever plans for an accident or unforeseen issue, but when it happens you want to make sure your roofing contractor is going to be able to take care of it.

The bottom line is; do your homework. I know you want to get it taken care of quickly and for the least amount of money, but if you can do it right the first time it will take care of the problem for good. And you won't have to be calling people back out over and over again. If I can be any help to you at all, please don't hesitate to reach out!
